ANINDYA NOVYAN BAKRIE is Chairman of VIVA, an Indonesian media and content house owning two national networks – one that focuses on news channel (‘tvOne’) and the other on lifestyle channel (‘antv’) – with 170 million viewers. Besides this, VIVA also invests in several new media/internet platforms, from news portals (‘’), gaming, social networking to e-commerce. Anindya is also CEO of Bakrie Telecom, the largest publicly-listed CDMA wireless operator in Indonesia with over 13 million customers and has taken the lead in consolidating the Indonesian telecom industry.

Anindya is no stranger to the world of business, being born into one of Indonesia’s oldest and most successful conglomerates. He is the eldest male of the third generation of the Bakrie family business empire which controls a range of public-listed companies in Indonesia. With businesses in mining, oil & gas, plantations, telecommunications, media, property and infrastructure,  Bakrie Group has a combined market capitalization of about USD 15 billion and a daily trading volume of 30 percent of Indonesia’s Stock Exchange. Anindya is a philanthropist at heart. He has led the third generation of Bakrie family to establish the Bakrie Center Foundation (‘BCF’) in 2010.  BCF is a philanthropic organization which supports Indonesia’s best and brightest to study at leading universities at home and abroad through its scholarship programs. It has also taken the lead in developing regional insights by establishing endowment funds at leading think tanks in the world. The BCF achieved a milestones on 26th July 2010 with the establishment of the Bakrie Chair for Southeast Asian Studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC; and on 18th November 2010 launched  the Bakrie Professorship in Southeast Asia Policy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, which saw a matching fund from the Singapore government. In Indonesia, the BCF has scholarship agreements with 11 Universities, they are : the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), University of Andalas at West Sumatera, University of Lampung, University of Mulawarman at East Kalimatan, University of Hasanuddin at South Sulawesi, University of Sam Ratulangi at North Sulawesi, University of Udayana at Bali, University of Airlangga at East Java and University of Cendrawasih at Papua, for its Bakrie Graduate Fellowship program. These agreements and endowments funds are a template for successful public-private partnerships.

After earning his MBA from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern, Anindya cut his teeth in investment banking with the Salomon Brothers in New York before returning to Indonesia to join the family business. Besides spearheading the Bakrie Group’s foray into the different ICT initiatives, he is also the Principal and Director of the Group’s private equity fund, Capital Managers Asia. He is the Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry; one of the three presidentially-appointed members of APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) representing Indonesia.  Anindya also sits on the board of the International Council of Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

Anindya writes regularly on issues that concern Southeast Asia. He has monthly columns in the Jakarta Globe, and writes occasionally for the Jakarta Post and the Wall Street Journal. He is currently working on a book on the challenges facing ASEAN in the post-Cold War era.
